Let’s begin this tour of the beaches of L'Ametlla de Mar. I'm not sure whether you prefer sand or rocks. At the Cala, as we call it, you’ll find both. If you’re a nature lover at its purest, L'Ametlla de Mar has untouched coves. Yes, untouched. That is, coves where maintaining the natural state of the coastline has been prioritized. These coves carry the green flag distinction awarded by “Ecologistes en Acció”. These pristine beaches stand out for their environmental quality, as human intervention, according to the ecological organization, is minimal or almost non-existent.
The 7 coves that hold this distinction in L'Ametlla de Mar are:
Cala de Santes Creus: It is one of the most interesting for its beauty and high landscape value. Also included within the PEIN (Natural Interest Protected Area), we can find on one side the Mediterranean coastline and on the other, a natural lagoon of great natural and ecological interest.
L’Estany Podrit: On the southern side of the town, along the route of the GR-92, we find this small pebble beach. As a curiosity, there are two large pine trees in the middle of the beach, almost right by the sea. A natural sunshade that has rooted in this cove for many years.
Cala de l’Illot: One of the most paradisiacal spots par excellence. This beach is a small patch of land that connects the coastline with the Rock of l’Illot. This place is surprising for many reasons. One of which is obvious: its unique and authentic Mediterranean beauty. The other is that it’s not always accessible. It all depends on the sea level. This characteristic means that, some years, the Rock of l’Illot appears as a small island, while in other years, it’s a peninsula of the coast.
Port Olivet: Along the coastline of L'Ametlla, we find remnants of the Spanish Civil War. One of these is the coastal battery, also known as "the fortifications" of L'Ametlla de Mar, hidden between the Estany beach and Port Olivet beach. These factors, alongside its beauty and natural charm, make it one of the most visited due to its high historical value.
Cala Llenya: Also on the southern side of the town, we find this small beach tucked beneath large reddish cliffs, pines, and agaves. This feature makes it stand out from the other beaches.
Cala de l'Àliga: This cove is located at the southernmost tip of the municipality, in an incredibly scenic spot. It is a cove made up of pebbles.
Platja del Torrent del Pi: Surrounded by lush pine vegetation, we make our way along a dirt path to reach this pebble beach, named after the ravine it ends in, the Torrent del Pi. It is currently the naturist beach of the town, an ideal spot for nature lovers in its purest form. With a natural lagoon, it is part of the protected natural spaces along the coastline of L'Ametlla de Mar.
On the other hand, L'Ametlla de Mar also has other types of beaches with access suitable for all kinds of visitors. The beaches recommended below hold the Blue Flag distinction.
L'Alguer: Located in the center of the urban area, this beach is easily accessible and is one of the best beaches for family enjoyment. So, if you're visiting L'Ametlla de Mar and wondering what to do with kids, don't hesitate and head here. The beach is monitored by the Red Cross, just like the other Blue Flag beaches.
Platja de Pixa-vaques: Situated at the end of the promenade, it is the cherry on top. A beach surrounded by nature and with a campsite nearby. Like all Blue Flag beaches, it features ramps for accessibility, showers, and many other services.
Calafató: This beach is located in the Calafat urbanization and has a surprise. On one side, you'll find the path that leads to the Ribellets, small coves that will captivate you. So, if you enjoyed Calafató Beach, don’t forget to visit these dreamy coves.
And the journey doesn't end with the Blue Flag beaches. L'Ametlla de Mar also has other beaches and coves that you shouldn't miss because they have a special charm.
Platja de Sant Jordi: This is one of the beaches located in the northern part of the municipality. This beach has a triple attraction. The crystal-clear waters and fine sand are some of the beach's highlights. Plus, enjoying the landscape under the watchful eyes of the ruins of the Sant Jordi Castle is priceless. The fortress, dating back to the 12th century, is one of the municipality's historical treasures. Also, don't worry about parking. Therefore, this beach is also an ideal choice for a family outing.
Cala Forn: This is a beautiful beach located very close to Platja de Sant Jordi and Cala Vidre. The landscape and water quality are a common theme for the coves in this northern part of the municipality.
And finally, L’Estany: L’Estany is one of the favourite spots for locals. It is a natural harbour and beach with incredible charm. There’s nothing better than enjoying the sunset in this spot! It will steal your heart. We hope this virtual journey through our beaches becomes a reality soon! We look forward to seeing you!
And if you're someone who enjoys action when thinking about the beach, meaning practicing water sports, don't miss out on everything that the L’Ametlla de Mar Experience has to offer.
