The 11 sandy coves of l'Ametlla de Mar that you can't miss this summer
L'Ametlla de Mar boasts 18 km of natural coastline with around 30 coves and beaches, some with fine, white sand, others with small stones or pebbles, all surrounded by pine forests that reach the sea, protected natural areas, lagoons, and cliffs. You can choose the cove of your dreams, as there is one for every taste—discover them! Here, we present a journey from north to south through 11 of these coves, the ones with fine, white sand, some of which have been awarded the Blue Flag, which guarantees services and environmental quality at our beaches. It also rewards water quality, safety, facilities, and the optimal provision of services and information, highlighting their commitment to caring for and maintaining the natural surroundings.
-
Cala Calafat: Located at the northern part of the Port of Calafat, its two breakwaters ensure that the waters are always calm. With fine, white sand, it is ideal for visiting with children. During the summer, there is a bar service, and its proximity to the Port of Calafat also allows visitors to enjoy a range of nautical activities such as kayaking, jet skis, boat rentals with or without a license, sailing trips, and more.
-
Cala Calafató: Situated between the Calafat urbanization and Marina Sant Jordi, it is one of the most valued beaches in l'Ametlla de Mar. It is a fine, white sand cove surrounded by a large pine forest, about 60 meters wide and 150 meters long. It offers surveillance services, showers, and a beach bar. Since 1996, it has continuously been awarded the Blue Flag distinction due to the quality of its water and sand.
-
Cala Lo Ribellet: One of the most idyllic spots on the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar. It takes its name from the shape of a "ribell" (a natural stone barrier) that forms two stone jetties, creating a sheltered space for the three small coves that make up this area—three coves in one, each of different sizes but equally charming. The one located to the north is the largest and thus the most popular with bathers. It also offers a bar service during the summer.
-
Platja de Sant Jordi: Located at the foot of the castle of the same name, built in the mid-12th century, you'll find the well-known Platja de Sant Jordi. Surrounded by a protected natural landscape, including coastal lagoons, it is one of the longest beaches on the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar. A must-visit if you come here, it offers showers, surveillance, a beach bar, and access for people with disabilities.
-
Cala Vidre: As its name suggests, its waters are always so clear and transparent that they look like glass. Although recent easterly storms have reduced its size, it remains one of the most visited and photographed coves on our coast.
-
Cala Forn: Located between Sant Jordi and Cala Vidre to the north of the town, we find this magnificent cove, also surrounded by abundant vegetation. It is one of the busiest beaches in l'Ametlla de Mar. It also offers surveillance services and a beach bar.
-
Cala L'Estany Tort: It takes its name from a small freshwater pond located in the ravine of the same name. Right next to the parking area, there is a picnic area. It is also highly recommended for families with children due to the shallow waters.
-
Platja de Pixa-Vaques: A small sandy cove located at the northern tip of the town, at the end of the seafront promenade. In a semi-urban setting, it allows visitors to enjoy both the beach and the services offered by the town. At one of its most well-known spots, the Pixa-Vaques pier, you can enjoy panoramic views of the northern coastline of l'Ametlla de Mar. Accessible for people with disabilities.
-
Platja de l'Alguer: Located in the heart of the town, this is one of the largest beaches along the coastline, about 120 meters long. Hidden beneath the seafront promenade, it is one of the three beaches, along with Pixa-Vaques and Cala Pepo, that you can find within the town center. It is accessible for people with disabilities.
-
Caleta de Pepo: Also known by locals as "La Caleta," it is located just south of the Nautical Club of l'Ametlla de Mar. Although it is a small sandy beach, its sides have large, flat stone areas that allow for more visitors. Right next to the access point, the GR92 coastal path begins.
-
Cala Bon Capó: Located just south of Bon Caponet (a pet-friendly beach), this is the southernmost sandy cove on the coastline of l'Ametlla de Mar. Beyond this, the beaches are rocky, and the coast enters the protected PEIN areas.
In addition to these 11 sandy coves, the coast of l'Ametlla de Mar also has other coves with fine, white pebbles, some of which have been awarded the Green Flag distinction. This award recognizes pristine beaches and coves that are in the best environmental conditions, where human intervention is minimal or nonexistent.
