L’Ametlla de Mar has five beaches where you can find coastal lagoons: Sant Jordi, Torrent del Pi, l’Estany Tort, Santes Creus and l’Estany. The beach of l’Estany Tort is located in the lagoon that is formed at the foot of the ravine of the same name. Located some distance from the town centre, the beach extends along 50 metres in length and 60 metres in width. It has shallow waters with little waves, and is formed by a mixture of fine sand and pebbles. The area is surrounded by Scots pine forests (Pinus halepensis), with an undergrowth of scrubland that includes species such as the olive tree (Olea europaea) and the margalló (Chamaerops humilis). This set of vegetation forms a habitat of community interest that contributes to the biodiversity of the area. The spaces in question originate in the final stretch of the Mediterranean ravines or boulevards, which carry water in periods of flood every 10-15 years. When the first impact of the water occurs, it breaks the sediment bar that forms the beach and excavates the basin where the lagoon is formed, creating small deltas. The origin of the water that fills the basins is underground, with fresh water springs influenced by the infiltration of seawater into the sedimentary and highly porous subsoil. This water mixing causes the chemical conditions of the water to define brackish environments, where the species that live there have adapted to the presence of salt, a limiting element that excludes those species that cannot withstand salinity. Thus, very characteristic and unique habitats are defined, with a regular presence of endemic species, which gives these spaces great importance for the preservation of biodiversity. From the municipality, we are concerned about the conservation of these habitats, since in them we find species in high danger of extinction. Special mention should be made of the presence of the "samaruc", a fish species that finds ideal conditions for its conservation in these habitats. Thus, restoration projects have been carried out for these habitats, custody agreements with conservation entities and annual controls to conserve and evaluate the state of the habitat and the species. Currently, together with the Ebro Delta, this territory is the one with the most population centers of the "samaruc".
